Update Regarding the Closing of Commonwealth Church:
Jesus Never Changes
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.— Hebrews 13:8
In 2016, a few friends began gathering in our living room—opening Scripture, praying, and asking what it might look like to form a church marked by Jesus, friendship, and shared life. By February 2017, that dream became public as we started Sunday gatherings in Golden Hill. Two years later, in October 2019, we outgrew the space and moved into Clairemont High School. At that time, Commonwealth was full of life—around 160 adults and 40 kids were part of our growing community.
Then came COVID.
Like many churches, the pandemic hit us hard. And in August 2020, Nick was diagnosed with cancer. It was a season of pain, pruning, and deep dependence on God. Yet even in that wilderness, we sensed God was not finished with Commonwealth.
In 2022, we regathered—again in our living room, this time in North County—and began rebuilding from the ground up. Over time, we found a new home in Carlsbad, where we planted deep roots and lived out a renewed vision for community, worship, and mission. We’ve seen lives transformed, faith restored, and friendships forged that we believe will last a lifetime. We’ve seen healings, baptisms, new believers, and faithful endurance.
And now, with grief and gratitude, we’re sharing that Commonwealth Church has come to an end. On July 20th, 2025, we held our final gathering.
This has not been an easy decision. But after months of prayer, discernment, and difficult conversations, it’s become clear that continuing is no longer sustainable—financially, emotionally, or vocationally.
Still, we look back with awe.
From living rooms to high schools to Carlsbad storefronts, we’ve seen the hand of God. We’ve seen how the Spirit forms a people—not just an event or a brand, but a community becoming more like Jesus, together. We believe it was obedience that led us to plant this church. Obedience that carried us through hardship. And now, obedience that leads us to lay it down.
Seasons come and go. Churches open and close. But Jesus Christ never changes. We move forward—scattered, but not lost. We carry stories, friendships, and a deep hope that God wastes nothing.
Thank you for being part of this story. We will never forget it.
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May His face shine upon you and be gracious to you.
May He lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace.
Go in the grace and peace of Jesus.
